Leader

Educators seek out opportunities for leadership to support student empowerment and success and to improve teaching and learning.

I do not currently work directly with students that often but I love when I get the change to do so. The biggest leadership role that I can recall during my time at WSCC would be that I implemented a strong recycling project among my department. The recycling efforts were not in place in my department before I began working there. I even received the Caught Doing Good Award for my recycling efforts.

I have also implemented several organization efforts in our department which has helped us to run more smoothly and effectively. I do take up as many volunteer opportunities such as serving as a judge, signing up for committees and more as I see suitable and give campus tours to students when I can.

Leader Resources

Anthony Ray Hinton is a man from Alabama who was wrongly convicted of the 1985 murders of two fast food restaurant managers in Birmingham, sentenced to death, and held on the state's death row for 28 years. I had the pleasure of meeting him when he came to WSCC to share his story. He has a book out now, The Sun Does Shine: How I Found Life and Freedom on Death Row, and Oprah is turning it into a movie. This is an inspiring book that all leaders working with adult education  should read.

There are four different types of leaders: Pragmatists,  Idealists Stewards, and Diplomats. It is important for a leader to know what type of leader they are.

How to be a leader - No one is born to lead. This is the idea at the heart of this thoughtful book on true leadership. While popular culture feeds us images of the stereotypical leader—charismatic, powerful, decisive—the truth is, with the right amount of self-knowledge and authenticity, anyone can be a good leader.
